Since 1996, the Spirit of Construction Foundation has recognized the leaders of the Greater Cincinnati construction industry with prestigious Lifetime Achievement Awards. Past winners have included 116 industry leaders.



“The Foundation is pleased to announce this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award recipients. They have spent their lives demonstrating personal leadership, improving the construction industry, and inspiring those around them to do the same,” said Bill Riddle, president of the Spirit of Construction Foundation.



This year’s Lifetime Achievement winners are John Strawser of Valley Interior Systems, Jeff Read of Nelson Stark Company, and John Steel, Jr of Hilltop Companies. A posthumous award will also be dedicated to Michael Griffie Sr. of M-Pact.

Messer Construction Company
Mark S. Luegering is a lifelong Cincinnatian and seasoned construction leader whose 40-year career at Messer Construction Company reflects his deep commitment to operational excellence, innovation, and community. A University of Cincinnati civil engineering graduate and former UC soccer player, Mark joined Messer in 1983 after four years as a co-op. He quickly rose through the organization, opening the company’s first regional office in Lexington, strengthening its presence in Louisville, and later leading operations across Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus, and Indianapolis. In 2018, he was named senior vice president and chief operations officer.Mark has been instrumental in advancing Lean practices, quality assurance, prefabrication, technology solutions, and career development for Messer’s craftforce. He is a graduate of Leadership Cincinnati and UC’s Executive Program, and has served in leadership roles with Allied Construction Industries and the Spirit of Construction. His community involvement includes serving on the boards of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, OneSource Center, Kicks4Kids, and the UC Engineering Alumni Association. Known as a “doer of things,” Mark is an avid golfer, UC athletics supporter, bourbon enthusiast, traveler, and outdoor adventurer. He and his wife, Tia—whom he met at St. Dominic School—have three children and several grandchildren.

Mike Huseman is a third-generation construction leader and the CEO of the Huseman Group. Mike, along with his team, built a family of five specialty trade and construction companies known for excellence in safety, quality, and innovation. Since Mike and his partners acquired the original business, HGC Construction, in 2002, he has grown the organization from a $7 million firm into a $250+ million enterprise with nearly 350 employees across Cincinnati, Columbus, and Nashville. Rooted in the values of integrity, craftsmanship, and “doing it right,” Mike blends his passion for well-run businesses with a visionary approach to leadership. He is widely respected across the industry, earning honors such as the Vistage Lifetime Achievement Award and contributing to organizations including ABC, Allied Construction Industries, and NKU’s Construction Management Advisory Board. A strong advocate for the trades, Mike fosters collaboration between construction management and specialty trade partners and champions diversity and inclusion through initiatives like Women in Construction Week, Construction Inclusion Week, and co-op programs for underrepresented students. Beyond the industry, Mike supports his wife Sara’s efforts to combat food insecurity in the Milford area — and her passion to help people get back on their feet. He supports youth training programs, community development efforts, and conservation. His team revitalized a holiday tradition into the Huseman Holiday Express, engaging Huseman Group employees in providing an incredibly memorable experience for the students at The Frederick Douglass Elementary School.

Paul W. Hemmer Jr. is the CEO of Paul Hemmer Company, a century-old construction, real estate development, and building services firm serving markets across Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. Representing the third generation of Hemmer family leadership, Paul has spent his life immersed in the building industry, developing deep expertise in design, engineering, project management, and development. He cofounded Paul Hemmer Construction Company in 1982 and has guided its evolution into the diversified organization it is today. Known for his integrity, relationship-driven leadership, and commitment to quality, Paul is actively involved in Hemmer’s strategic planning, business development, and the mentoring of future company leaders. Under his direction, Hemmer has earned numerous industry awards and built a reputation for delivering value-engineered, flexible, high-quality buildings tailored to each customer’s needs. Paul holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from Purdue University and is a registered Professional Engineer. His contributions extend beyond the company through active involvement in civic and professional organizations across Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati.
