Saturday, October 22 at the Duke Energy Convention Center the Spirit of Construction Foundation will honor three eminent constructors: Kathy Daly, Greg F. Moratschek, and Robert (Jack)son Scott III. The trio will be recognized with Lifetime Achievement Awards.
The 2011 recipients of the industry’s top award share strikingly symmetrical career and volunteer paths. Not surprisingly, all are past dinner chairs and trustees for the Spirit of Construction Foundation. But in an interesting commentary on the stability of the construction industry in Greater Cincinnati, all three have worked for more than three decades for one employer. Furthermore, each of them played a leading role in creating employee ownership plans for their respective companies—Messer Construction, Hummel Industries, and H.C. Nutting.
Kathy Daly
recently retired as CFO for Messer Construction, where she continues to serve on the board. In her forty years there in accounting, finance, and administration, she created a more diverse workplace at Messer and broke new ground for women in the traditionally male-dominated construction industry.
Daly has been a volunteer director for many organizations, including finance programs at the University of Dayton and University of Cincinnati business schools, the Cincinnati chapters of the American Red Cross, YWCA, and Easter Seals Work Resource Center.
Greg Moratschek
is president of Hummel Industries, where he has worked since 1975, primarily in marketing. He is the third generation Moratschek to be associated with this venerable masonry firm— established in 1847, one of the oldest businesses in Cincinnati.
Moratschek is past president of the Cincinnati chapters of the American Institute of Construction, Rotary Club of Greater Cincinnati, and Allied Construction Industries.
Jack Scott
is a registered geologist in his home state of Kentucky. He has been with H.C. Nutting for 35 years, served as president of 20 years, and has been senior vice president since it became a Terracon Company.
Scott has provided volunteer leadership for numerous organizations, including Northern Kentucky University and University of Cincinnati College of Applied Science, Campbell County Extension Council, Rotary Club of Greater Cincinnati, American Institute of Construction, and Allied Construction Industries.
The Spirit of Construction supports civic, educational, and training ventures for youth with proceeds from its annual Celebration of Construction gala. Last year it contributed more than $125,000 for college scholarships and to area nonprofits that sponsor construction education programs.
The event celebrates the construction industry and recognizes individuals for their lifetime contributions to the industry and to the civic, aesthetic, and economic well being of the Greater Cincinnati Region.
Dennis B. Phillips
, Vice President for The Quandel Group, Inc. is chair of the gala, which will be held at Duke Energy Convention Center.
